I wish the legal system would see that it's not really a choice, especially for young ones. It's coercion. You refuse blood because of the consequences you will suffer. Not by the sky fairy but your own family and community. That's huge for anyone, let alone a kid.

JWs always paint us normal people & our lives in the worst possible light. Not all jobs are stressful and few jobs are always stressful. Plus, some people thrive on stress and find it challenging and exhilarating, especially if it pays well. Most times, there is the option of getting another job if you can't take it.
But it would be far more stressful to be financially unstable and not have enough money to live comfortably while working and after when you're retired.

I could be mistaken but I believe the boy was from the UK. A quick google came up with a Josh McAuley, from the West Midlands. He was 15 and the article says he told doctors he didn't want blood. It was 2010 though, so perhaps the system was changed there, to avoid this horror in future.
Of course this talk could have been about another Josh. Hopefully not.

Smarmy little man, that Morris. How easy for him to stand up there, healthy and alive, and pontificate about Josh providing "a good example of faith in the face of incredible stress and "persecution". What was the persecution? The doctors were trying to convince him to save his own life with necessary medical treatment, as they would be expected to do. And that's "persecution"?
What's really persecution is the coercion that goes into this whole "choice" of refusing blood. They'd be up for persecution from their own cult, even their own family. Persecution in the form of being looked down upon as weak. Maybe even disfellowshipping. Would they DF someone over making the choice to live?

Saename, good for you for going to university. Seems like it's more accepted by the JWs these days, or at least most of them. In my day, it was verboten. Hence, I did not get to go to university after high school, despite being a stellar student. I got in with a good company who paid for part-time night school to upgrade my skills, so I could work my way up and earn a very good salary. I still would have done a bit better with a proper degree though but I managed quite well anyway. Learning a good trade is another wise option.
Living within your means is always good advice, and the JWs didn't invent that. But to deliberately hobble yourself educationally and financially is stupid advice, and the JWs did invent that one. The end is just around the corner apparently.

Jehovers Witnesses are not the only ones....
by The Rebel in"more than half of the people in the u.k either aren't saving at all or they aren't saving enough to give themselves the standard of living they hope for" ( the money advice service).
how do you have your retirement planned?.
as for myself, i never botherd with putting money in a pension, i opted instead to invest in buy to let properties.

There's a difference between those who can't save enough either due to having a poor start in life and not earning enough, or unforeseen financial/job problems and those who deliberately hobble themselves educationally and financially because "the end is near!". Here in the US many earn minimum wage, or near to it, and would love to have retirement savings but live a hand to mouth existence and can't. Many of them even have degrees. But one injury/hospitalization comes along and their "cheap" health insurance wants them to pay the $6,000 deductible before paying out, and that's it for any savings, let alone retirement.
I'm doing fine because I got out at 20 and despite no degree (thanks to the JWs), managed well in the workforce and placed a lot of importance on living frugally and saving for rainy days and my retirement. Plus I married a man (non-JW) with the same philosophy. We're both early retired. But we've been enjoying life too, with quite a bit of travel, so we're not just scraping by.
We both got that from our parents - although for me, that attitude came from my dad. My JW mother frittered away every cent my dad brought home while they were married and after she converted. When she divorced him in 1999, because he was a "spiritual danger", she got half of what he did manage to tuck away in retirement savings. She frittered that away too, since you know, it's all gonna end any day now!
My dad always told me to save for your retirement so that I wouldn't end up like him. He's doing okay though as he lives in Australia which has a decent social safety net and he's with a lovely lady who was a saver all her life. I'm glad and relieved for him. My non-JW brother has to help my mother out quite often as he earns the big bucks and has no kids. He resents it but feels an obligation. I don't.

Things sure have changed since I left in 1980. Back then I remember the JWs smugly thinking themselves so much more superior than other religions because it didn't beg for money. It was all very voluntary, low-key, no pressure.
It's been interesting coming online to learn about all the differences. My mother's the only one in and since I've learned to never talk about her cult if I want to have a bearable conversation with her, I'm not aware of the way things have degenerated. This is a new low. How much lower can they go?

MY BEST FRIEND
by compound complex inhe walked right past me, looking straight ahead.. years before, hal and i walked the same path, the best of pals.
laughing and joking while endeavoring to maintain some level of decorum during our serious work of being a theatrical spectacle to men and angels.
although we hadn't seen each other in years, hal must have gotten word .

You write beautifully. The last two paragraphs made me a bit teary, because I've been there. Especially that last paragraph. Boy, does that cut right through your heart when that happens. Just a simple action that, walking right by you, ignoring you ... it's a powerful weapon to wield at someone. I will never forget the first time that happened to me, in 1980.

ToesUp, same here. During the depressing phone conversations with my mother, I also get to hear how wonderful the brothers and sisters at her KH are. My husband is never as good as brother so-and-so, and I can never compare to sister whatsername. I can understand talking about your friends and what they've done, as part of the conversation, but it's more of a game of oneupmanship with her. JWs = Great. Us normal people = Lacking. She's never accepted that my life has been a success and that I'm happy, never told me she was proud of me or of my kids. But some random people and kids at her KH, well, they're just so wonderful since they're good little JWs. That's all that matters. It's hopeless. No wonder I don't call her often.

I'm with nonjwspouse. Just be happy, live a full life, share your positive experiences. Maybe something will click with them. Maybe not, but that's not your problem. The cult does tend to suck the joy out of life. My mother thrives on doom and gloom, so the cult is perfect for her. Conversations with her are tiresome and depressing, and have been since she decided to not shun me totally, about 1987. I've tried to cheer her up but it's very brief before she predictably drifts back into how terrible things are and how it just can't possibly continue .... Zzzzzzzzz.
